MG led an optional CPD session on the use of Kahoot in the classroom for fun interactive quizzes that also allow you to view a really effective overview of the assessment answers.
First of all MG set up a ready made Kahoot for the staff to attempt playing to show them how easy and simple it is to join a Kahoot game and play interactively with an IPAD or Smartphone. Once the quiz was complete MG showed an example from his own teaching and how he created it. MG then went through how kahoot collates the answers and how these can be used to check pupil and class understanding. MG revealed how after one test he did, the responses revealed he needed to re-cap a particular area of a topic. Also one of key benefits to Kahoot is how engaging it is to the pupils and how excited they get because of the leaderboard it produces after every question. Staff were then given time to try and set up their own quiz. During this time participants were encouraged to ask questions and get support for creating their quizzes or finding and editing already available quizzes from the shared resource section.

MG, MS and AM led an optional CPD session on the use of Google forms for assessment quizzes and surveys.
First of all MG introduced google forms for assessment purposes. Using an example from his own teaching MG talked through how to set up a multiple choice quiz. MG then went through how the google forms collates the responses and how these responses can be used to check pupil and class understanding. MG revealed how after one test he did, the responses revealed he needed to re-cap a particular area of a topic. To make sure the session was practical. MG showed how to set up a new quiz including the question options, the answer key and how to insert images if required. Staff were then given time to try and set up their own quiz. During this time participants were encouraged to ask questions and MG, MS and AM provided support for staff in creating their quizzes. AM then talked staff through how to use Flubaroo. Flubaroo is an add on available through google and has to be installed. Flubaroo enables staff to auto mark when you have created a survey. This has to be used on the survey format. Flubaroo also enables staff to share the grades and scores with the pupils. The pupils can see which questions they got right and wrong so helps them in their learning. MS concluded the session by showing how a google survey can be used for pupil voice purposes. Using the example from last years pupil voice questionnaire MS talked through how PE used the responses to conduct pupil interviews. Rather than have short answer or paragraph responses the questions asked students to scale their responses from strongly disagree to strongly agree. PE then identified students who had strongly disagreed with questions and conducted pupil interviews to find out why. The pupil interviews gave a much clearer picture and the responses were fed back to the department on a spreadsheet. BR and WR lead an innovation session on the use of technology to provide effective feedback to pupils. We focussed on two main areas - Explain Everything and Screencast-o-matic. We demonstrated how we have used these in MFL to create mentoring videos to send home to parents, exam feedback videos and personalised DIT feedback videos. During this time, participants were encouraged to ask questions and we tried to answer them as best we could. In languages both of these methods are great for marking work as we can never write as much as we would like to explain otherwise we would be writing pages!
To make sure the session was practical and allowed the participants to try out a method fully, we asked them to bring along a piece of work that they wanted to mark. We used both rooms of the portakabins so that staff could spread out and not be self conscious about someone hearing them recording their first attempt! BR and WR circulated around all the members to check how they were getting on. For those who didn’t even know how to begin, we sat with them one on one and helped them set up and begin. LP came to see how the session was getting on and it was great because she was able to see everyone giving it a go and she was able to answer some of our questions too! Since the session, we have followed up on whether they felt their use of SOM and EE have been successful. NG has used it effectively in both PE and Drama. Although SF recognised it's usefulness in languages, he still has systems in place that are just as speedy and effective and for now, this will be something that he considers for the future. We have offered to help anyone who tries it in the future, whether it be send examples of our work or setting up a quick “how to begin” session with these programmes. This is what it is all about - using technology where it makes things more efficient or easier, not just technology for technology sake! |
